Thank you to everybody for all your help in making the Supercar track day such a success. It was great to see all the boys and girls turned out so smartly and with the county banners, photo displays, kayaks and sailing dinghy, I think we presented the 8th and scouting very positively. Everybody seemed to have a good time despite the extreme cold and thankfully it did stay dry. Thanks again for all your help.

Welcome to our third newsletter. Just to give you an insight into what has been happening with the Support Osprey Scouts team. The first meeting was held in December 2011 and since then the fundraisers, together with the help of parents, friends and family have managed to raise a significant amount of funds to complete a badly needed renovation and refurbishment of the kitchen/galley.

Although we were first formed to help with this project it is our wish that we continue to help raise funds for further requirements that may need attention in the future, eg kayaks, canoes, sailing dingy, minibus, just about anything the Executive Committee could need funds for.

KITCHEN/GALLEY UPDATE

Our first project this year was to raise funds for the kitchen. We held two events, received donations/grants from local companies and we have also been lucky to have parents of the Group personally raise funds by taking part in marathons, etc. A lot of work has been undertaken over the last few months which SOS and 8th Worthing would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped, particularly the people listed below.

We recently applied to the Worthing Community Partnership for a further grant for the kitchen and received a payment of £1000.00. Other donations/grants were reported in the SOS Newsletter 2, but just for your information:-

We are being nominated by Worthing Community Partnership for a charity box at Asda. After you have done your shopping you will be given a counter to put in the charity box of your choice. We don’t know when this will be or for how long. If you are shopping in Asda please keep your eyes open and make sure you help us along with your donation.

Firstly we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported our first venture into the world of fund raising by attending our cheese and wine evening. We have received fantastic feedback and have been asked when the next event is going to be! Because of you support we managed to raise a staggering £656.18 which is brilliant. We also received several donations from parents who could not attend thank you to them too.

A special thank you to Mary Teakle who ran the Brighton Half Marathon in February and kindly donated her sponsorship money to us and raised £360.

Donations have also come in from Southern Water for £250 and we were granted £2271.55 from the members of the CLC committee which has given us a really good start to reaching our target of £10,000.

It isn’t only money that we need to raise, we really need our parents to pledge their time too. We are in the process of starting a list of people’s names who can offer their expertise which we are going to need to complete the kitchen e.g. plasterers, electricians, carpenters, painters, decorators and tilers. If anyone is in the building trade and project manages jobs like this, we would be really grateful if you would contact us if you’re able to help.

Our next fund raiser is going to be on Sunday 15th July, we are hoping to arrange a BBQ together with a Cricket Tournament, teams will comprise Beavers up to Explorers, Leaders and Parents so it is a real family affair. We will give out more information nearer the time but please put the date in your diaries, it’s one not to miss.

Another date for your diaries is 23rd June, we have been lucky enough to be selected to arrange a car boot sale at Adur Recreation Ground jointly with the RNLI. This is the perfect opportunity to start your spring clean and gather together all those unwanted items and sale them at the car boot making yourself some extra money and help support 8th Worthing.

We are very excited to announce the start of our support group to raise funds for 8th Worthing Sea Scouts. We are parents who hope to arrange 2-3 events a year and anyone would be welcome to come and join us. As you can see we are calling ourselves SOS (Support Osprey Scouts) sub committee, we thought it relevant to our group as; this is one of the many messages they learn to sign with flags, but probably one of the most important.

We are sending out an 'SOS' as there are many projects within the group, but at the moment the galley is our fundraising goal. The galley is now approximately 20 years old, there is no hot water and the cupboards/work surfaces/floor/cooker etc are badly in need of replacing. We estimate the total cost to be in the region of £10,000. We hope to enlist the help of parents/guardians and carers within 8th Worthing group who have the expertise and/or qualifications to take on some of the electrical/plumbing/plastering/decorating work which would help to cut the overall cost.

Our first foray into the world of fundraising is to hold a Cheese and Wine evening on 24th February, 7.30-9.30 at the 8th Worthing Headquarters. You may already have seen the posters displayed, it will be a fun evening offering you a variety of cheese’s and three glasses of wine, however if you wish to purchase additional glasses of wine you will be able to. The cost is £10.00 per head, families and friends are more than welcome. There will also be soft drinks available for a small extra cost and a raffle. This is a great opportunity to meet our Scout Leaders and also to socialise with parents from all of the packs. We are hoping to display a plan of the new galley and it will also give you an opportunity to see how bad the old one looks.

Donation for the raffle and also small cakes to sell on the night would be great.

Your support in the purchasing of tickets is greatly appreciated and will go a long way in helping us to reach our goal.
